Mental breakdowns have a massive impact on our physical and emotional health. To help us grow out of it or to help us understand this concept better, we can always reach out to various mental health professionals like Life coaches, counselors, psychologists, therapists, psychiatrists, healers, depending on the intensity of the breakdown and the impact it has on us. To get in touch with such professionals, you can look for mental health services near you (these can be available on the telephone or in person too). But what’s best is to find a silver lining in any situation that comes in our lives. Similarly, we learn a lot from our mental breakdowns too.

What is a mental breakdown?

Before understanding the concept, let us know what mental breakdown is exactly. A mental breakdown (also known as a nervous breakdown) is when a person is overly stressed or emotionally drained and unable to perform their daily tasks. It is not a clinical term or a disorder. However, it might be an underlying issue that may result in bigger mental health problems like depression, anxiety, stress, etc. Therefore, we recommend talking to someone or seeking mental health services when you encounter such an episode.

HOW A MENTAL BREAKDOWN MANIFESTS

A mental breakdown is for humans what an engine breakdown is for machinery. There can be multiple reasons for a mental breakdown like insomnia, stress, a state of panic, burden at the workplace, etc. Insomnia is one of the main signs of breakdown manifestations. The body metabolizes stress hormones when you sleep, so insomnia prevents you from ‘resetting’ your stress levels which means it takes very little to tip you into the stress overload or panic zone. Another sign is panic attacks. Prolonged feelings of nervousness can lead to immense feelings of fear that seem to come out of the blue. Other signs and symptoms include extreme mood swings, feeling numb, self-sabotaging, and isolation.

  1. UNDERSTAND YOUR WANTS

A mental breakdown teaches you what is important for you. Despite running after temporary sources of happiness and joy, look for meaningful aspects of your life. Not only will your journey of finding the meaning begin, but you will find yourself even more focused than ever before. Mental breakdowns come as lessons to teach what matters in your life and what you need to stay strong in life.

  1. FOCUS ON YOURSELF

In our lives, we always try to take care of people, love them, be compassionate, and empathetic towards them. We generally believe that self-care, self-love, and more such concepts are overrated and selfish. Going through a mental breakdown can realize the gravity of all these self-related concepts. It will also help you understand that you really can’t show these emotions and feelings towards others if you can’t have it for yourself.

  1. LEARN TO LET GO

Holding on or being strong looks pretty on the outside, but it is painful on the inside. This is one of the most important lessons that mental breakdown teaches. You might not be able to let go as of now, but eventually, mental breakdowns will give you the courage to let such people, thoughts, and emotions leave your ally. Thus, helping you create a beautiful space around you and heal.

  1. SEE HAPPINESS AS A PROCESS

Mental breakdown helps us conceive that happiness is not an end goal that we can achieve by doing a set task. Instead, it is a continuous process. And each day of our life, we have to wake up and strive to explore happiness in life. So, whatever is making you happy at the moment, embrace it and enjoy it to the fullest but don’t stop or get stuck on that point only, keep moving in life and remember life is even better than what it seems.

  • PRACTICE GRATITUDE AND LIVE IN THE PRESENT

Mental breakdown teaches you to practice gratitude in your life daily. With you being thankful, your feelings of being victimized are return with a stream of fullness, vitality, and appreciation. Don’t beat yourself up because you couldn’t leave the house. Instead, be proud that you managed to get out of bed on a rough day. Every little thing becomes an achievement if you are grateful for what you have.

We spend a lot of time worrying about the future, and it is natural to think about it. But during a breakdown, this tendency can deplete or exhaust us even more. Practice being at present. If you are having a bath, notice the warm water flowing down your body. The scent of the bath oil, and simply listen to the sounds that emerge out of the silence. Know that at this moment, everything is alright, nothing is wrong. And it is just you and your surroundings, that’s it. Everything is ok right now.

AN UNSPOKEN MESSAGE

Mental breakdowns happen because we have burdened ourselves with the piled-up emotions, worries, and work that we need to let go of, to give our minds some rest. There were messages we needed to heed, bits of emotional learning, and communicating we didn’t do. It has become desperate, and we should understand and even empathize with its mute rage. Mental breakdown teaches us that we should no longer be in this state and that our life demands a turnout for us to be happy.
